| description | Sugar cane rural workers’ condition in Brazil, and particularly in Pernambuco, was considerably improved in the early 1960’s. Besides, Labor courts were installed in some medium-sized towns in the region, thus offering them the concrete possibility of defending their rights. The military regime, from 1964 on, questioned many of those benefits, but nevertheless maintained legal framework and trade-unions. Judicial archives provide data permitting to draw a profile of the plaintiffs, and add many details about their lives and labor as rural workers on sugar cane plantations. |
