description The popular horizontal gated communities are real estate products developed within the scope of the Minha Casa Minha Vida Program (PMCMV) that have spread in brazilian urban/metropolitan areas in the last decade, especially in more peripheral areas. With the case study of the city of Fazenda Rio Grande, a member of the Metropolitan Region of Curitiba (Parana / Brazil), this paper seeks to understand the spatial transformations resulting from the insertion of these real estate development in the metropolitan periphery. For this, it analyzes the characteristics of these condominiums, the locations of implementation and impacts on the lives of residents. The results demonstrate that the strong role played by developers and builders in the development of these condominiums favored urban and metropolitan expansion and a series of impacts on the daily lives of residents.
