| Summary: | As the Korean language is gaining popularity within business, culture and media spheres, there appeared a necessity of translating original Korean texts into different languages. This involves various problems concerning lexical aspects. Technical or academic texts, newspaper articles have their own specific features
which can be explained by dictionaries only. Due to the differences in language structure, culture and traditions, it may appear that some of lexical units in literary texts are quite hard to translate. In order to make appropriate translation, some of these units need transliteration and additional explanation. The aim of this paper is to show examples of non-translatable or hardly translatable words in Korean classical poetry which often includes elements of traditional Korean life, as well as to explain ways of translation and rendering their meanings. Ho Nansorhon’s poetry has been chosen, because she is the best known Korean poetess, whose poems are excellent examples of traditional poetry. The semantic method has been used to investigate the meaning of words. The conclusion has been made about the necessity of compilation of special dictionaries of non-translatable and hardly translatable words. Furthermore, the translator should be an expert in culture-oriented linguistics in order to be able to perform adequate translation and to form a respect for Korean culture in the reader’s mind. |
