Description
Summary:In this paper, syntactic derivation of the correlative constructions in modern Turkish is examined within the framework of the Generative Grammar for the first time. The following points are emphasized in the study: (i) for simple correlative constructions, a subordinating correlative clause containing a wh-phrase must be merged to the demonstrative in the matrix clause as local as possible in a structural manner, (ii) there are two plausible syntactic accounts for generating Turkish simple correlative constructions, i.e. the first is based on base-generated approach and the second is based on movement approach, (iii) the derivation of simple correlative constructions is diffrent from the one in unconditionals, (iv) regarding multiple correlative constructions, the most local position for a subordinate clausal material which should be merged to the matrix is the minimal IP containing demonstrative pronouns, and (v) the multiple correlative constructions in Turkish can be generated using the non-movement IP adjunction strategy.
