| description | In China, students from ethnic regions often face significant challenges in mastering Mandarin, primarily due to the influence of their native languages. This struggle is further compounded by various factors, including inconsistent use of Mandarin by teachers, a lack of practical classroom resources, and a one-size-fits-all teaching approach, which hinder students’ spoken Mandarin proficiency and communication skills. To address these challenges, we propose an initial teaching activity framework that integrates advanced speech technologies across three key phases of the Mandarin teaching process: Motivating, enabling, and assessing, based on the Production-Oriented Approach theory. Then, we conducted three rounds of action research with 42 students to refine the proposed framework. At last, the effectiveness of the enhanced framework was evaluated using a univariate repeated ANOVA to analyze the results in Mandarin expression proficiency, complemented by comparative assessments of quantitative data and qualitative classroom observations collected throughout the research. The results indicate that the intelligent speech technology-assisted Mandarin teaching framework significantly enhances students’ Mandarin proficiency and effectively enables teachers to integrate technology into their teaching practices. This proposed framework has considerable potential for widespread application in initiatives to acquire Mandarin as a second language, equipping teachers with vital tools to improve their teaching strategies. |
