Description
Summary:Chinese society today can be defined as producing different forms of compressed modernity, in which historical, social, political and economic, but also individual and collective temporalities tighten and intertwine. We introduce here the notion of “compressed temporality”, which favors the superposition, intensification and multiplication of social, economic, ecological and sanitary risks. Temporalities and spaces in China today combine to produce mobilities, migrations and very intense circulations. The conquest of self emerges as a question of intensity linked to the acceleration of objective and subjective social and economic temporalities; the figure of a “compressed Individual” then materializes in the society. Collective temporalities give way to micro-mobilizations that foster public micro-arenas where, in an authoritarian context, democracy is built “bottom-up”.
