| description | Due to globalisation and industrial development, the Vietnamese government has seen the need to enhance engineering training in its universities to face these new challenges. In addition to the current organisation of the classic Universities, still heavily inspired by the soviet System, parallel engineering training programs are being created, seeking excellence and based on international standards, in partnership with establishments from different countries. For historic reasons, two models have been singled-out, the American system embodied by the Universities of Technology and the French model embodied by the Ecoles d’Ingénieurs. In order to understand how and why international educational models inspire curriculum organisation in engineering education, this article will concentrate on two specific new programmes set up in partnership between two distinct universities in Ho Chi Minh City. Based on the sociology of curriculum methodology, analysis will highlight the main organisational and political principles of the programmes (eg: selection of students, active pedagogy, links with companies etc.). This study reveals tensions and challenges raised in setting up these engineering training programs in a system inspired by long-established traditional models, while reconfiguring them to meet local needs and ensuring a renewed approach to innovation. |
