description According to the National Health Policy for impaired people, health care is based on health promotion. It covers five activity areas: putting in practice healthy public policies; strengthening community action; creating healthy spaces; developing personal skills and reorienting health services. This study aimed to analyze thesis and dissertations available in the CAPES portal that looked at health promotion of visually impaired people. This a descriptive and exploratory bibliographic research, carried out between April and June 2008. Abstracts of scientific production on visual impairment published between 1998 and 2007 were used. Ninety-seven abstracts were found. The human science area predominated. It was followed by exact sciences and health sciences. The studies focused on the creation of healthy spaces, followed by the reorientation of health services. Nursing was found in only one study in the latter area. Further research on this theme is suggested for nursing, contributing to more effective care delivery from a health promotion perspective.
