Description
Summary:In the Burgundy region, the ratification by France, in 2006, of the Convention for the safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage led to the immediate creation of the Maison du patrimoine oral a centre for the oral heritage based on an association first created in 2007 and officially opened in 2008. This regional resource centre collaborates with various inter-regional networks and brings together several associations active in the realms of traditional music and dance, oral traditions, folk tales and languages in Burgundy. The Maison du patrimoine oral has undertaken a sound archive conservation project in connection with other regional centres, as well as a promotion and transmission project. Research carried out in 2014 and 2015, under the direction of the anthropologist Jean-Louis Tornatore, set out to assess the dynamics at work within this centre, exploring the ‘ICH effect’ in Burgundy. Indeed, although this structure exists in keeping with a national political agenda, it is first and foremost the concrete expression of an activist movement and the social dynamics which have developed either alongside or with the help of institutions over the past forty years. Following an ‘attached research’ methodology, in line with a pragmatic approach, the article will address how these dynamics show that heritage is topical as well as the civic dimension of heritage actions. The transition of this movement as it became an institution as well as its impact on the future of this collective action will be analysed.
