Description
Summary:Movies by John Waters always feel out of place, neither fully highbrow nor part of the classic underground cinema, they seem to walk a tight rope between avant-garde and exploitation. One reason for this is the fact that at the core of their dynamic is the presence of a paradoxical beauty: his love for what is regarded by many as kitsch. The aim of this article is therefore to analyze what role such a so-called “degenerate” form of art, which is neither popular nor camp, plays in John Waters’s private world. We will start with his movies but will soon go on to explore his own house in search for clues. In so doing, we will try to solve the mystery of whether John Waters has built his house as a private version of his own films, or turned his films into an extension of his own private house?
