Si irrobustisce così l’ipotesi che piotta ‘cento lire’ proceda etimologicamente dal piemontese piòta ‘zampa, gamba’.
A note on the etymology of piotta ‘one hundred lire’
The paper examines the etymological hypotheses for the word piotta ‘one hundred lire’. It backdates its first occurrence in a text written in Italy, offers a plausible explanation of its diffusion from Piedmont and Emilia-Romagna into the central regions of Italy, and proposes that the presence of the intense -t- in the Romanesco dialect and Italian is due to the contact between jargon speakers speaking, among other things, also popular Italian, in its Piedmontese regional variety. The hypothesis that piotta comes etymologically from Piedmontese piòta ‘paw, leg’ is strengthened.
