description Through Serge Patient’s memories and the Schwarz-Barts’ photographs, we are trying to infer André Schwarz-Bart’s journey in French Guyana, from Cayenne to haut-Maroni, which was then a little-known territory. This article is exploring the reasons why the writer went there, and the impacts of this 1960s voyage on the notes he left, laying the groundwork for the subsequent novel Adieu Bogota (Seuil, 2017). As a matter of fact, penal colony and slavery, as well as the marronage and the separatist movements they obviously triggered, deeply affected French Guyana’s history... and André Schwarz-Bart’s work.
