Summary:The article analyses a system of exercises aimed at fostering students' autonomy stimulating the development of their foreign language competences in the foreign-language study activities. It is designed for undergraduate students of nonlinguistic universities learning English as their first foreign language. It is tailored with respect to the students' age, motivation, and conditions of studying foreign languages in Russian nonlinguistic universities. The system relies on the competences-based approach to language teaching and as such it provides for students' level offoreign language in terms of components offoreign language communicative competence.
