description | Based on the case study of the Museum of Memory and Human Rights in Santiago de Chile, which opened in 2010 and retraces the period of the military dictatorship, this article aims to approach what happens inside the museum with the purpose of reconstructing the glances, sensations and ways through which the public appropriates the contents of the permanent exhibition of the museum as well as the memory of recent past. How do visitors come to grips with the past? This article aims to show that the visit is primarily marked by an implicit pact between visitors and the museum, which determines that certain corresponding sensations and perceptions must be experienced. By adopting the proposition of immersive practice during the visit, visitors weave a relationship with the past, based on truth and empathy. In this relationship, the role of emotions is central, as is the reinforcement of a self-image in relation to the past, based on values and principles pre-existing the visit. In this way, during the visit, the initial motivation to learn more about history is supplemented, and even displaced, by an immersive and emotional experience, which finds its strength for visitors in the undeniable authenticity they recognize in the museum. |
