description The noted lack of research on news topics seems to be due to the challenges involved in defining and identifying them. This article attempts to eliminate those two obstacles. Drawing on a systemic view of mass media, it characterizes news topics using conceptual notions of media events, categories, and signs. The article treats mass media news, broken down into multiple topics, as a moment in time that is both constantly renewed and shaped by the distant and not-so-distant past. It goes on to suggest a number of tools for successfully identifying news themes based on a corpus of output from television and radio stations and the press.
