Description
Summary:If there are Romanesque portals whose structures reflect the desire to create a marriage between the considerations of function and image, that of the abbey of Saint-Pierre de Moissac is such a place. Built in 1130 west of the southern wall of the abbey the porch is imposing and richly decorated. It is a source for the study of the temporality of the sacred. As access to a building in which the liturgy takes place, the porch is a passageway, as well as a separation. It serves the constituency of the ritual place in relation to the daily space. The partitioning which it creates is of particular importance in monasteries, a cloistered zone. Marking a boundary, it defines the temporality of the liturgy in contrast to the secular unfolding of time. At Moissac, the sculptures testify to the stakes of this temporal distinction. The images of the tympanum make visible the singular rhythm which characterizes the ritual practice, and sets in motion its participants. The themes carved on the side walls of the porch also evoke the relationship of man to time: they make it possible to consider it under the ‘moral prism’ of the freedom of each one. The sculptures highlight the spiritual issues involved in crossing the porch, the passage between two distinct temporalities. Taken together, the whole answers a fundamental question of religious life: how can man, a temporal creature, unite with the timeless God?
