| Summary: | This article presents a qualitative investigation into the complex dynamics of intensive poultry farming in Italy, with a particular emphasis on the laying hen sector in the context of the Capitalocene (Moore, 2016). It explores the ambivalent relationship between farmers and hens, shaped by technological advancements and the scientific authority of veterinarians. The study highlights a twofold distancing : first, the increasing use of advanced technologies throughout the production process has reduced direct human-animal interaction, fostering a sense of alienation among breeders ; second, veterinarians, through their expertise in zootechnics, influence poultry practices in ways that further mediate this relationship. The article critically examines the lack of a meaningful bond between farmers and animals, reflecting on the subordinate status of hens within the hierarchy of livestock species. |
