| description | Contrary to the idea that associates religious deviance or minority with secrecy, Jansenism offers a different case study. During the eighteenth century Jansenists made their deviance public throughout the city of Paris, the major manifestation of which being the pilgrimage to the tomb of Deacon François de Pâris. Even though women participated to the movement, different sources give little evidence, as female influence was not simply tacit, but indeed constituted a right acknowledged by uses. Yet, urban institutions membership was resolutely male, the impotence of women, in that case, can be explained by their being foreign to the discourse of municipal bodies, which did not prevent them from acting “like men”. Therefore, the effective female investment in the Jansenist cause regularly posed the insoluble problem of their political role in a society in which the issue of representation became crucial. |
