Summary:Background: Beta thalassemia is the most common genetic disorder in Pakistan. Thalassemia is a preventive disease a fact well demonstrated by countries such as Italy, Greece and Cyprus. Thalassemia prevention program especially prenatal diagnosis has been successfully introduced in Pakistan since 1994. Aims and Objectives: After completion of seventeen years of extensive thalassemia prevention program there is still no reduction in the rate of childbirth with transfusion dependent beta thalassemia. This study was designed to evaluate the role of social factor, lack of awareness about thalassemia in the propagation of beta thalassemia gene in Pakistan. Results: Results of social survey were analyzed by Usman & Moin thalassemia awareness chart that revealed profound unawareness about thalassemia in Pakistani population. Conclusion: This study identified lack of awareness as a major factor that playing a vital role in the propagation of beta thalassemia gene in Pakistan. To eradicate beta thalassemia major from Pakistan awareness about thalassemia in Pakistani population should be created.
