In January 2023, Zhao was suspended by the World Professional Billiards and Snooker Association (WPBSA) as part of a match-fixing investigation involving ten Chinese players. He was subsequently charged with having knowledge of match-fixing and betting operations on the World Snooker Tour. Following an independent disciplinary tribunal, he was banned from competition for a period of 30 months, but the WPBSA reduced the ban to 20 months on account of his early admissions and guilty plea. After his ban expired on 1 September 2024, Zhao returned to competition as an amateur player and won four consecutive Q Tour events, finishing top of the 202425 Q Tour Europe rankings and regaining his professional status for the start of the 202526 season.}}
As an amateur, Zhao qualified for the main stage of the 2024 UK Championship but lost to Shaun Murphy in the first round. At the 2025 World Championship, he won four qualifying matches to reach the main stage; he then progressed to the final where he defeated Mark Williams 1812 to win his first world title and second Triple Crown title. Zhao was the first player from Asia to win the World Snooker Championship and the first to win a ranking event while competing as an amateur. He became the fourth qualifier to win the world title, after Alex Higgins, Terry Griffiths, and Murphy. His victory at the World Championship meant that he was ranked world number 11 on his return to the tour in June 2025. Provided by Wikipedia
